Every Black person deserves to easily find a stylist who understands their hair, and every talented stylist deserves to be found.

That is the belief Rooted exists to serve. Everything else, the platform, the agency, the wider vision, is how that belief becomes real.

Why this matters

Finding a good Black hairstylist in London is broken. Nearly one in three Londoners have textured hair, yet less than 1% of UK salons can properly style it. For the people who live with this, finding someone means hours of scrolling Instagram, DMs that go unanswered, asking around, or travelling across the city on the strength of a single photo with no idea of price. It is a genuine, daily, frustrating problem, and it has never been solved properly.

On the other side sit thousands of talented independent stylists, most working from home, mobile, or small studios. They are brilliant at what they do but invisible online. They do not have the marketing budgets, the websites, or the time to be found. Their biggest barrier, in their own words, is simply that not enough people know they exist.

So you have people who cannot find a stylist, and stylists who cannot be found. The demand and the supply both exist. What is missing is the thing that connects them and treats this community as worth building for. That is the gap Rooted fills.

What Rooted is today

Rooted is a London borough-based discovery and booking platform built specifically for Black hairstylists and the textured-hair community. It is live at rootedapp.co.uk. Clients search by borough, see real portfolios, prices and availability, and book directly. Stylists list for free, manage their bookings, and get discovered by the clients who need them.

It is purpose-built for textured hair, not a generic salon tool with textured hair bolted on as one category among hundreds. Every stylist is personally verified. It is community-driven and founder-led. That is what makes it different from the general booking platforms and from the specialist attempts that came before and never built the trust the community needed.

The bigger picture

Rooted today is a booking platform. But that is only the first room in a much bigger house. What I see is Rooted becoming the foundation for the entire Black hair economy. Not a way to book a hairstylist, but the infrastructure a whole underserved profession and community has never had.

Now

Discovery and booking. Live, and taking bookings today. The foundation everything else is built on.

Next

The agency, representing Black and textured-hair stylists for the creative industries, starting with music artists. Stylists managing their whole business through Rooted, not just being discovered on it. Kids' and family hair as a real, trusted part of what Rooted serves.

Beyond

Physical spaces that stylists can rent, so Rooted supports them offline as well as online. A national presence, then international. London is the start, not the ceiling. Hair confidence, and reshaping how textured hair is seen, valued and celebrated as a whole.

You do not invest in what is already there. You invest in what will be.

The agency: the second engine

Alongside the consumer platform, Rooted is building an agency that represents Black and textured-hair stylists for the creative industries. Music artists first, then film, TV, editorial and advertising. The customer here is not the everyday client. It is the industry buyer, the label, the manager, the production, who now need textured-hair specialists and have nowhere to find them at scale.

The gap is real and documented. 71% of racially diverse actors have reported hair teams that could not meet their needs. Broadcasters including Sky, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, and the industry body Pact, now require textured-hair-competent stylists on productions with Black talent. The demand is mandated and the supply is scarce and unaggregated.

The model. The client pays the stylist's rate plus a 20% agency fee. The stylist never loses income, the fee is added on top. That makes stylists better off working through the agency, not worse.

Why it connects to Rooted. Rooted the platform is the talent pool the agency recruits from. Every stylist onboarded to Rooted is a potential agency candidate. Building Rooted builds the agency. One network, two markets, each feeding the other.

Why I am the one doing this

I built Rooted from concept to live platform myself, in months, while studying. I personally onboarded every stylist through direct outreach. I am part of and close to the community this serves, and I care about it beyond the business. This is not a market I picked because it looked profitable. It is a problem I understand, in a community I belong to, that nobody else has been willing to build for properly.

I am not chasing scale at all costs or an early exit. The goal is a sustainable, community-rooted business that creates real opportunity for Black hairstylists and genuinely changes the experience of the people it serves. Growth and profitability matter, but in service of the mission, not instead of it.

How you can help

Not everyone who believes in this needs a stylist or is a stylist. Plenty of people simply care about the change Rooted is trying to make. That support matters, and it should have somewhere to go.

Follow the mission

Stay close to what is being built, and be part of the journey as it grows. Occasional updates, no spam.

Spread the word

Word of mouth is how this community already works, and it is the most powerful way to grow the platform among the people it is built for.

Nominate a stylist

Know a talented stylist who should be found? Point Rooted toward them. Supporters become the network that helps grow the platform's supply.

People do not follow a business. They follow a mission, a belief, a change they want to see in the world. Rooted is a real, working platform, but it is also a movement. To make finding a stylist who understands your hair effortless. To make talented Black stylists impossible to overlook. And over time, to change how textured hair is seen and valued altogether.

The platform is how it starts. The vision is where it goes. And the mission, that everyone deserves to find someone who gets their hair and every stylist deserves to be found, is why any of it exists at all.
